we crave human connection

we move from spacious rooms
and green lawns
to climbing twenty-five steps
and sitting in our tiny four walled apartments

we hope the tinier spaces will give way to
deeper connections

we move to the grey and tan buildings
in hopes to feel a little more

carpools and driveways are exchanged for
bus stops and sidewalks

we choose these things because we crave
human connection

we are scarred
from the green lawns and large living rooms

we were privatized and kept away from our neighborhoods
because that’s what you do where the
cars are parked in the driveway and the
doorbell is just for you

we want to see our children play in the streets
while also being watched over by the streets

we want to be seen
heard
listened to

we want to share our lives with the others who find themselves here
we want to feel alive
